Michael Cusack | Fundamentals of Design
During this six-week studio-based course, students are offered a hands-on exploration of the core elements and principles of design alongside an introduction to experimental painting practices. Michael will support students in working with essential design components—line, shape, form, value, colour, and texture—while developing an understanding of key design principles through practical application.
The course integrates a range of methods including drawing, collage, typography, painting, and assemblage. With a focus on mixed media and experimentation, students will explore composition, mark-making, and materiality, building confidence across both design and painterly approaches. Guidance will be provided in developing work as a series, progressing from small-format studies to larger-scale compositions.
Designed as a comprehensive foundation for aspiring creatives across disciplines such as art and design, graphic design, industrial design, web design, interior design, and fashion design, this course emphasises both visual effectiveness and conceptual development. By the end of the course, students will have developed the skills to create thoughtful, functional, and visually engaging work through a variety of studio-based processes.
Suitable of all levels of experience.
